#FITLife: The day in the life of Rich Ames

What does a normal day look like at Fruition IT for a Recruitment Consultant?

Richard Ames - Recruitment Consultant, Fruition IT

Hi, I'm Rich and I'm a Recruitment Consultant & Account Manager at Fruition IT!

Take a read below to find out more about me and my role at Fruition IT!

What I do…

My role is incredibly varied – I am the main point of contact for several of our key clients, and will lead the delivery on both permanent and contract roles across all skills and seniority levels. I remain hands-on, managing my own portfolio of vacancies, whilst also co-ordinating the recruitment process, and identifying opportunities for account development and new business.

I wanted to become a recruiter because…

To be honest, I never really did, not until I graduated at least. I studied Classical Civilisation at Leeds University, which is a real passion of mine, but doesn’t lend itself to any specific career path! Recruitment seemed like an interesting role that paid well, and there were plenty of options in Leeds to choose from.

How I became a recruiter…

I started working in a resource / delivery role in a small firm, recruiting in the manufacturing and engineering sectors. I was in a team of 4, with an office in the spare room above a barbershop. I was soon promoted into a 360 Recruitment Consultant role, and then made a move into the IT sector a couple of years later.

I have been with Fruition IT for…

Pretty much exactly 1 year! It’s absolutely flown by. I’ve nearly 10 years’ total experience in recruitment, with 7 years of that being in IT.

I chose to join Fruition IT because…

Fruition works with some really exciting clients who are great fun to recruit for and attract candidates to. The ways of working and general approach to recruitment were in line with my experience and how I like to operate. I also felt I got on well with all the three Directors I met during the interview process – for me one of the key motivating factors in recruitment is having a boss you really want to work for and can have a laugh with.

My typical day as a recruitment consultant…

There is no typical day! As much as I can plan for the day or week ahead, it’s usually totally different by 10am on Monday! Most days will consist of a mix of client meetings, taking on new vacancies, writing job adverts, searching for candidates, arranging interviews, and catching up with contractors – with plenty of other random things thrown in.

I love working at Fruition because of…

The people. I’ve been lucky enough in my career to work with some great people and great recruiters, and Fruition is no exception. What sets Fruition apart is the team culture and how motivated everyone is to succeed – this is helped by having an outstanding management team who truly lead by example.

I am most proud of…

I’m rubbish at blowing my own trumpet, but there are a couple of major recruitment campaigns that I am currently working on now that I think will turn out to be highlights of my whole career when I look back in the years to come.

My funniest Fruition memory…

My memory is terrible these days, but I remember some hilarious boozy nights on Zoom during Lockdown 2 & 3, as well as some fun nights at the West Riding when the pubs opened again. It’s not such a funny memory, but a highlight of the last year is completing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks for charity. That day was a struggle from the start and only got worse as the day went on, but I can honestly say I’ll never forget it and I’m so proud of the whole team for completing the challenge, even as the light was failing us.

The future of tech recruitment…

It will be an increasing move to automation, AI, and analytics. The tech sector (and by extension tech recruitment) isn’t going to slow down any time soon, so it will be all out working smarter and getting the most out of our time.

The future of Fruition IT involves…

Now we’re out of lockdown (touch wood), I’m looking forward to spending more time out of the office with the rest of the team. We’ve got some exciting incentives and trips lined up, and the Christmas party is always a highlight of the year!

One random fact about me…

The next big thing on my bucket list is to attend the 24 Hours of Le Mans. I was planning on going for my 30th but Covid got in the way. Maybe next year…
